If it were me, I would move to Jersey, especially if you already have a job in NYC. Also, North Jersey isn't that bad, and is very close to the city. You can also look into parts of Rockland County, which is just north of Jersey. Nyack especially, which feels like a New England town overlooking the Hudson. You would still be in a short drive distance to NYC.

However, if you have your heart set out for NC, please try to get a job before you move, especially if you're coming to any of the major cities. If you do move to Concord, you'll be in the Charlotte metro, and Charlotte is very competitive with finding a good paying job.

What draws you to NC?

Think about the things you take for granted that you'll miss. Figure out if the trade-off is worth it. What do you expect to be different?

Please come visit. NC is a big state. Only you can decide where you should live. Ditto on the "get a job first" advice.

If you move to Ahoskie, hope you like small town living!

OP...I have lived in both NJ and NC. I was in the southern Jersey area - Burlington County, about 35 mins from Philly. It was pretty sweet, I miss NJ. It was close to the beach, PHL, NYC, and the country. I would choose a southern Jersey area if I were you especially if you have family in Jersey already. Burlington, Monmouth, Ocean etc. Northern Jersey is an urban wasteland, but coming from NYC I'm sure you already know this. SJ is gorgeous.

As for NC, Fayetteville and Greensboro remind me very strongly of NJ. Concord is right outside Charlotte, I've never been there but I can imagine it's very suburban style. What are you looking for environment-wise? Urban? Suburban? Rural? Population? What kind of things do you do for fun? What kind of work do you do?

Let's stay on topic. OP asked about towns in NC. Let's answer that question.

Side note: The way to ask a person whether the father's location is of concern is to simply ask: "Did you need to be near your child's father when you relocate?"

We don't know the disposition of the child's father. He could be alive, he could be dead, he could be a deadbeat dad, he could be a wonderful dad that will visit no matter where the OP moves. He could live in NC, he could live in NY/NJ area, or he could live in another country. We have no idea, and it's useless to speculate unless the OP chooses to offer up those details.

I'm confused, why would you want to move somewhere that you've never been, admit that you know nothing about?

She has family in NC and wants to move out of NY. She should definitely do more research before making a decision, but isn't that why most people post here, to learn more?

OP, if your family is more easterly in NC, what about Concord and what you've heard a lot about it appeals to you?

Are you looking to rent or own, what's your budget? Job situation? What are you needing from child care and schools? What other amenities or recreational interests are important to you?

I know, which is a bit of a drive, from what I can tell, from either Auburn or Ahoskie where her family are, which is why I was asking what about Concord specifically, captured her interest.
