Hello everyone. I have been following various threads on the state and would like to hear from knowledgeable posters about what city/region you feel would be best for someone who teaches performing arts? (Dance, voice, drama)

Expand on teaching — do you teach in schools, if so any particular grade level? Do you teach in a studio? Hope to open your own studio? Any of the larger cities should have some options for you, but a little more specifics could help us.

Have taught in schools, but primarily teach at studios and colleges.

There's certainly a good arts scene in the Triangle, but I don't know how saturated the market is with instructors. Lots of colleges here, too.

Charlotte could be good. Fewer college opportunities, but the ones there might be easier to get a foot in the door.

I don't know what sort of background you have when you say you teach at colleges. I think the drama depts at UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke and State are all very good, so I don't know that it would be easy to get in there unless you have an excellent resume. There are community arts centers that might offer easier entry, but maybe less $$.

Durham is home to the American Dance Festival, so there's that going on. Lots of dance studios in the area. They also have an arts based high school, the Durham School of the Arts which is pretty highly regarded (named number 1 high school in NC on that USNews list, fwiw).

You might also check out Winston-Salem and Greensboro. Both have well-known universities in Wake Forest (Winston) and UNC-G (Greensboro). UNC-G is well-known for its arts programs. The NC School of the Arts an audition-based boarding conservatory teaching at the high school through graduate school level is in W-S also.

I recommend Winston Salem. They have one of best schools in this state for this field.
They teach high school and college.

Contact Winston-Salem School Of The Arts.

That's a relatively recent name change (changed in 2008, school founded as NC School of the Arts in the 1960s), but I do stand corrected. And what a horrible website. They really need a redesign on that — does not reflect well on the excellence of the school. It's a fairly unique conservatory for NC, in that it serves high schoolers through grad students.

Actually, it is a fairly unique conservatory in the universe. Several years ago, the Film School was ranked 7th in the world.

In an analysis based on quality per tuition dollar, there were non even close.

UNCSA is a state treasure.
