I've known several natives of Virgina, and whenever you mention West Virginia, especially to the ones from Richmond, they just roll their eyes.

What I find amusing, having studied West Virginia's civil war history for the past decade, is how Virginians do not understand how Richmond basically betrayed West Virginia into Union hands. While Union soldiers raised in West Virginia basically stayed there to defend Union interests, the 20 regiments of Confederate West Virginians were pulled east to defend Richmond and the Valley. It was mostly West Virginians who were defending the Shenandoah, and who saved Lynchburg from being sacked by David Hunter.

That's weird.
Case in point, there is a thread right now talking about "moving to The Carolinas". Then she goes on to ask specific questions about SOUTH Carolina.

To be fair, she said she's interested in checking out places in both states but said that as of right now, a few cities in SC have piqued her interest. With the criteria she specified, she can definitely find places in NC that suit her as well. But I agree that she should at least ask the question in both states' forums. The good thing is that a lot of people have experience with both states, so she's still getting good information about both states in this forum.

I'm guessing the same reason one says The Dakotas, The Great Lakes, New England, Gulf States, The Heartland, Rocky Mountain West, Pacific North west, Tornado ally, the Great Plains, etc.

A geographical terms.

There is definitely some of that in NC, regarding SC.

That would **** some of the Canadians off so much. "I'm from America!" Yeah, we get it, we know you exist and "America" is not "America"... but you don't have to get all uptight and pissy about it.

Enfin, nous sommes des Etats-Unis...

Yeah, but when was the last time you ever heard anyone refer to "the Virginias"?
