I think the title is misleading. Sections of the larger NC cities are far more dangerous than any of the listed cities. Also, property crimes (which this article includes in its statistics) are only potentially dangerous (when the property owners are present).

Which sections of the larger NC cities are more dangerous? Do you know that from experience in some of those cities? maybe you could post some research you've done on the subject. Thanks.

In particular are sections of the E. Market St. and Lee St. neighborhoods in Greensboro. I know someone who worked in that area who walked out to his car to get his lunch (2nd shift) and witnessed a gun battle right across the street at the convenience store; one guy killed. Not an uncommon occurrence in that area. Very dangerous.
Title of the thread is the title of the article. The article was produced by a home security company so of course they will create a title in hopes to get backdoor advertising for the business.
They gather the data from FBI and its page is labeled Uniform Crime Report but that isnt as catchy.
The site rankings has lot to be desire too, when considering the statistics as ratio for a smaller town will be higher vs a big metro imo.
We are in Hickory often, and never been or seen crime, nor would we visit the less desired areas.
Also that site I assume took average of few crimes for the article so it appears higher for the piece.
If you look at certain stats in FBI report for instance Black Mountain, it has double property crime than Hickory.

Here's another; just did a quick search. No experience there. 11th most dangerous neighborhood in America (apparently; don't know what year this was)
Charlotte, N.C.
Neighborhood: N. Tryon St.
Found within ZIP code: 28206
Predicted annual violent crimes: 352 Violent crime rate (per 1,000): 108.94
Chances of becoming a victim there (in one year): 1 in 9
Notice the violent crime rate is much higher than any of those listed in the article, which IMO paints a completely misleading picture of those towns.

Everything is relevant. Crime in pockets of large cities is always going to be. You would have to take several surveys of research and study the statistics, such as: Inner city crime by large city; Crime by population of city; Crime by "type", Crime by Zip Code, etc. And there are plenty of statistics if posters want to do further research by each police department's records, by type of crime, dates of crime, so forth and so on.
To say that the ten cities mentioned in the OP's post is not factual, or skewed, and cannot be relied upon is off center. Right here on City Data folks can do their own research on small cities, large cities, type of crime in the areas by subject.
All the data needed for preliminary information is right here; many knowledgeable posters find articles of interest, and post them for the benefit of people who come online to ask questions of the locals. Whether or not it is of benefit to those asking is purely up to the recipient to decide.

Sunny, I ran into a guy who had just been released from prison, don't remember which facility he came from. He hold me that his parole officer picked him up after doing an 18 year stint, and dropped him off in Black Mountain. I was curious as to why he ended up there and he told me that he was staying in a halfway house. Could this be one reason that BM has more property crime?
As the article says, a crime is a crime, but most of us are going to find weighted stats much more valuable. Petty shoplifting is a crime. But it isn't something that would be of as great a concern to homeowners as home invasions with use of a weapon, for example.
Also, when looking at FBI and DOJ crime stats, I always consider such things as homicides between two people who knew each other (often domestic violence or drug-related) homicide during a robbery, and gang related murders.
Statistics can be helpful but one must analyze them with discretion.
Fayetteville is so overblown now. Durham has improved dramatically and is not on the list.
I am really shocked that New Bern is on here.
