Winston-Salem is around 960 feet above sea level and is located in the Piedmont Region. The highest point in the Mountain Region is almost 7,000 feet above sea level.

A substantial amount in NC is like having tornadoes in NY it happens but not often. I mean if u count snow falling and melting when it hits the ground then yes but for it to reach a point of measurement at least once or twice a year. From here in charlotte anyway, the western part gets only a little more. For us to have snow the I-85 storm needs to happen. an area of low pressure needs to go up 85 and at the same point H pressure needs to be parked right over the upper part of the US brining the cold air with it and wedging it up the mountains. This happens 2 or three times a year usually the layers of the atmosphere are set up perfectly to allow for the big ice storm to occur but I am hoping for the big one.

Winston-Salem is considered the foothills of NC. The mountains start somewhere right around north wilksboro just west of W-S by 50 miles or so.

Im sorry but the foothills do not begin til you reach Wilkesboro down to Shelby . Winston is located in the Piedmont Region.
