My daughter, I and 3 grandkids will be traveling this weekend (July 12- 14) from Virginia to SC. We have suddenly decided to do a one night camp out as a special night for the kids as we return to Virginia. We prefer NC and along our return route. We prefer a river area for them to fish but a lake would be fine. We need it close to I 77 so we won't have to travel far off the "path". We do not mind paying a fair amount to tent camp and also do not mind "roughing" it as we have all of the equipment to do so. I would like to have "local" input as to an area where we can pitch a tent on Friday night and stay thru Sat evening. No attractions needed but nature, water (swim?) and some fish. Thanks

You could try McDowell Nature Preserve and their "rent a tent" site if you didn't want to haul your gear. Right on Lake Wylie!

You really waiting to last minute, I mean literally calling to make reservations on the day your leaving, and these campsites you have to make a reservation.

If you do camphave your family old shoes, plastic bags as you will likely be in muddy conditions and possibly experience rain. Have them steer clear of rain swollen rushing water.
