Top 5 winner states for Republican governors in 2013:
· Texas (152,912 people with $6 billion in AGI)
· Florida (74,094 people with 8.3 billion in AGI)
· South Carolina (29,176 people with 1.6 billion in AGI)
· North Carolina (26,207 people with $1.5 billion in AGI)
· Arizona (16,549 people with $1.5 billion in AGI)
Wow, talk about cherry picking. Let's use a notoriously prejudiced source to substantiate a conspicuously prejudiced perspective.
People are not "fleeing Democrat-run states for Republican ones." It just so happens that there is a great deal of corporate expansion in many Republican run states (hmmm, I wonder why?) and people are naturally following the jobs. "Fleeing" is a horribly incorrect characterization, and shame on you for perpetuating it.

Why? Deval Patrick became governor of Massachusetts raised taxes and I fled. First-hand knowledge.
If the Democrats had the sense to come back to the middle, these yahoos would fade like cheap perfume.
They and their extremism only win due to the hyper reaction of people opposed to the very liberal agenda and shenanigans of the Dems at the national level. Moderation, from either side, would kick butt.
You can go to the bank on this one: After the last two years in Washington, the pitifully ignorant right wingers will get STRONGER in Raleigh rather than receiving their just reward, which should be getting tarred and feathered and then ridden out of town on a rail!

On economic issues, the Dems have been moving toward the right for decades. One only has to look at the tax structure and rates of 40 years ago and follow it to the present to understand this. Dems in congress allowed Reagan's agenda to happen. Republicans do everything that they can to prevent Obama's. Unions continue to lose their influence and their effectiveness in strengthening the blue collar middle class. While top tax rates have ticked up a bit under Obama, they are an anomaly in a downward trending of tax rates since their peak in the 60s.
On social issues, most Dems today have actually been reluctant to be as progressive as the citizens they represent. They usually don't make a public leap into to support for social change until it won't destroy them politically. The politics of the "left of center" has lagged public opinion and always waits for the tipping point. The Dems tent, ideology of its party members and diversity is also way more broad than the Republicans: who have been on a social/economic ideological purity push for nearly 20 years now.
For someone who's been around for a more than a few decades, the Dems sure don't feel like a party pushing a "very liberal agenda" to me.
Only in America would people think Democrats are a "liberal" party. There are some politicians in the party who would classify as being left-wing, but not the majority. Republicans are a far-right political party, and the Democrats are a centrist party, with some leans to the right or left, depending on what issue you're looking at, and what region of the country. Only "true" left-wing party in the America is the Green Party and the two socialist parties. The Democrats have been this way since the Clinton years, and only Republicans have somehow deluded their selves into thinking otherwise.
That's what Republicans say about their billionaires.
There's nothing wrong with redistributing wealth to the poorer parts of the state. It's a surprisingly sane and quite progressive move by the legislature.
That said, it just demonstrates their hypocrisy. (It's ok to give money to poor folks if they look like us, I guess.)
The problem is that it's money from the poor in the urban counties, to the poor in the rural counties. The principle of propping up NC's hurting rural areas is one democrats would support (and did when they were in office). It's just that it's not the rich that are footing the bill.
Sales taxes need to die... they're obsolete in the 21st century anyway. Why do conservatives want to punish local small businesses, as opposed to offshore online retailers? Most states (including NC), do nothing to enforce their internet taxes, and logistically it's unclear if they could.
A value-added tax would make much more sense than a sales tax, but you won't see conservatives supporting it... because it's fair. It would draw money from everywhere in the economy, leaving no pockets for someone to continue accumulate it without getting taxed on it.
