I just read online tonight that BC/BS, as well as other insurance companies, want to have very large health insurance rate increases for 2016. North Carolina was mentioned at a 25% increase. These increases are supposedly because the amount of claims last year were much higher than anticipated; And young people are not enrolling as much as they thought they would.

I think this might really affect the appeal of places like NC for people who are anticipating a move to the area for lower cost of living, particularly retirees such as myself. Course that 25% number might not get approved but it will still be a high number nonetheless. A lot of times retirees don't take HC costs into consideration when relocating and then get surprised.

Actually, the requested increases in NC are LESS than those if sone other states,

Health Insurance Companies Seek Big Rate Increases for 2016

The financial viability of the ACA (Obamacare) was doomed from the minute they allowed young people to stay on their parents plan until age 26.

Make no mistake. It's because the people who obtained insurance through the ACA were sicker than anticipated. Duh. Insurance companies hate paying for health care. The CEO of BCBS just got an excellent bonus. Somebody has to pay for that yacht.

God forbid the CEO of a major insurance company get a big bonus. Let's demonize the oil companies, healthcare, or any other successful corporation!

Don't retirees use Medicare anyway? Or does the OP mean folks in occupations which allow retirement after 20 years of service? But I thought most of those had retirement benefits anyway. I'm confused.

So rates should be raised so the CEO can own many homes?

When service providers turn into for-profits, the service is no longer the focus. Insurance companies are the worst. Hospitals aren't good.

Bo, not everyone who is retired is over 65 (the minimum age to get Medicare unless you are disabled). I retired at 52 and health insurance has been a major factor in our lives since then. It was THE MAJOR reason we moved away from Mesa, AZ in 2012 (I could not even purchase insurance in AZ no mattercwhat I was willing to pay.)

I have no pension or retirement benefits from my job. Not common in my profession, and I didnt stay 20 years anyplace.

And guess what - I'm absolutely NOT a fan of the ACA. There were other, better ways to fix our healthcare and health insurance problems in this country. Sadky, that boat has likely sailed, saddling everyone with the ACA driven higher insurance costs,
