I bought a brand new Trailblazer September 25, and On my purchase receipt was $872.00 added to my purchase price for " Use Tax"., Now 4 months later I recieve a Vehicle tax bill for $264.18. Are these 2 seperate taxes that I have to pay each year??
besides house and land if you need to put a license plate on it (register it) you will pay property taxes on it and the rate varies from each city and county.
The HUD tax can only be up to 3% of the vehicle value and the rate you mention seems about right if the vehicle is brand new.
If you find you are being billed to much on property tax you can go to your local tax office and contest it (they will determine the blue book value and also depends if that city or county tax rate has changed.)
It should also be noted that the one-time Highway Use Tax (HUT) is a state tax, while the annual personal property tax is a local tax. Unlike many other states, NC has no sales tax on the purchase of motor vehicles.
My husband has an old hunk of junk car that he drove from Jersey, We would be lucky to get $50.00 bucks for it, And they sent him a bill stating the car is worth $1300. No way is it worth $1300. The tax he owed was only $39 and change so I paid it anyway.
I don't understand why my husband refuses to buy himself a new or not even new, a better car. My kids and I are embarrased to be seen riding in this car. I even drove him to a car dealer so he could pick out a better car, he flat out refused. He won't give this hunk of junk up for nothing. I don't know...Maybe it's a guy thing.

I am assuming you are referring to the county property tax even though you already paid it I would take to the tax office and see if you can appeal the amount and I cant remember if they credit or reimburse the difference. Get a blue book to take in with you.

Your husband is frugal, one can spend many hundreds a month on car payments, and what do you have, nothing but a way to get around, which he already has. There are many people that make decisions on need, and not in some attempt to impress others.
