Knowing that you will not find "country living" in the city, how large a town do you want to live in?

What do you like most about country living? Do you want to raise animals? Have a garden?

What do you do for a living? How far are you willing to commute for a job? Do you prefer being closer to the mountains or the beaches?

For the most part, NC is pretty rural* outside of Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Just depends on where your work is going to be, what kind of activities you're looking for, and what kind of climate you like.

*outside of city limits of course.

While I am probably wasting my time without further info from the OP, here are some towns in the eastern half of North Carolina that have some things interesting going on, are not too expensive and are not too far from a larger city:

- Edenton, near Chesapeake, VA
- Farmville, Kinston, Tarboro, Washington and New Bern, near Greenville, NC
- Richlands near Jacksonville, NC
- Elizabethtown, Whiteville and Burgaw near Wilmington, NC
- Dunn, Benson, Lillington, Smithville and Zebulon near Raleigh
- Southern Pines and Seagrove near Fayetteville.

That's Smithfield, not Smithville.

There are also towns near Charlotte that retain their country feel but are within commuting distance of the city. Kings Mountain is often suggested, but you can search the Charlotte sub-forum for mor suggestions.

Did you read this thread that says "If you're planning to move to NC, read this first"?

What kind of work you'll be doing will determine what city you might find work in--have you done any searching on the job market here? Have you ever been here at all?
