Does anyone have experience with this as far as negotiating with this county? I am afraid of making a 5 hour drive for no reason!
Can you ask the HR rep what the salary range is? That would give you an idea of how much above 36K they can go. In other words, if the range is 32K to 48K, there's probably a good chance you could negotiate 40K.

Edit: Here is a link to the County's pay ranges by job title. You can look there and see what the range is for the job you're interviewing for:

Can't advise on salary, but I like Greensboro. The Triad does not get the national press that the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) and the Charlotte areas do, but it's a nice place with some good stuff going on. There are some good schools according to test scores compared to the rest of the state. I don't know first hand. You can look up test scores at NC Report Card.

Your price point for a house is definitely low for Wake County, but you could look around Knightdale and Garner. Don't think you'd be able to score that in Cary. Cary is super desirable with many transplants moving in every day. Apex is similar. It's worth having a look around online, but pickings will be slim for a house in that price range. Greensboro will give you more housing options.

Schools should be fine in either area. Both are county wide districts. It's a completely different system then what's used in the NEast. You won't find any large area of either town that is comprised of failing schools. Some are better then others, but even that is subjective to each student. There are expensive areas of Gboro and cheaper areas to live. Picking either doesn't necessarily correlate with the quality of the school. I've learned from this forum how foreign the concept of price not determining school quality is for people coming from other areas.

This is very interesting! We currently live in an area with some of the "best schools in the country" within our county... but that's just it. It depends on where you live because there are a good portion of the schools that I wouldn't want to send my child to-- while others are teaching on tablets and have lots of funding! Thank you for explaining!
