Glittering is not a noun I would assign anyone outside of Los Angeles, Manhattan, Miami, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston and some parts of Chicago (Lincoln Park Trixies not withstanding).

Best of luck in your search.

Oh wow... are YOU in for a big surprise.
Even though there's a lot of vibrant-but-mellow energy in a few places here, North Carolina is still burdened with its past. It denies it... but that only turns the historic issues into "Disavowed Shadow." It's still a series of "small town thinkers." There is no "glitter" here.

But, there's some remarkable beauty and some aspects of N.C. shine. (No... glitter... but shine.)

I suggest Charlotte for you socially, but your academic needs will certainly be easier met in the Raleigh area.
The Raleigh-Durham area has some surprisingly nice, trendy restaurants and bars.

"Glitter"?
Curious, where did you live before you spent the 10 years in "LA"?

Oh... and you may want to look into Richmond, Virginia.
Do NOT be quick to buy here.
Couldn't disagree more. It's plenty glitter and "shine" here. It depends on what you're looking for. This area is growing TREMENDOUSLY. Being so called burdened by its pass, hasn't stopped its growth. When will you guys learn?

NC has plenty of glittering, uplifting people. I guess it depends on your definition of that word.

Glittering people. Flashy people who like to portray wealth in a very in your face materialistic nature. Huge mansions on the cliffs, top of the line eco friendly cars, plastic surgery maintenance and designer labels. That kind of lifestyle is pretty sparse here and the people who emulate it aren't received well professionally or socially.

I say check it out first. Coming from a background of London and LA and wanting glitz & glam. Visit.

I'm not sure whether the op is looking for suburban neighborhoods or urbanized areas. However, I do know that there are some small 1 bedroom lofts for sale in the Gateway Village area of Charlotte's 4th ward neighborhood.

The image above was shot from an 850 sq/ft 1 bedroom unit priced at around $175,000. This location is walking distance away from sporting events, museums, concerts, bowling, movies, grocery shopping, and numerous street festivals throughout the year. It's also walking distance away from a few business schools offering adult programs. Central Charlotte is very doable for the young professional who is looking to do without the added expense of a car.

Houston has a blue-collar, industrial vibe; "glitter" is the exact opposite of that. I get the mention of Dallas as it's more of a white-collar, fashionable, image-conscious city. Boston is more intellectual and Seattle seems to be more tech-y and grungy. Atlanta has a "glitter" vibe to it though with the entertainment industry being big there.
