Hey all-

I'm a mad scientist type dude in Raleigh, I love taking apart old electronics, making movie props, all that cool stuff, and usually I get my materials on eBay. I read this article recently though:

Apex Electronics, Your Souce For Oscilloscopes And Drop Tanks | Hackaday

Which highlights a store in California, Apex Electronics, which would be an absolute PARADISE for people like me. The only problem is, it's on the West coast. I'm sitting here crunching numbers on how much it would cost to fly out there, go on a shopping binge for a week, and freight all that loot back home. Not terribly economic, though I have to visit this place at least once in my life.

Does anyone know of anything similar to this place In NC? SC? GA? VA? Anywhere on the East coast? I'm looking for somewhere that has a lot of variety, and a lot of older gear like Apex. Do such places exist out here? Much easier for me to drive (even if I have to drive 12 hours!) so that I have a way to get it home in case I go a little nuts on the spending.

Now that Radio Shack is defunct, I usually buy my discreet parts online, but boy would I love to just go browse bins of stuff.

I'm open to all suggestions.
Other things I need to do:

-Visit the NC surplus store here in Raleigh.
-Go to ham radio events: Can anyone suggest any good swap meets on the East coast?
-Anyone know anywhere I can get discreet components? Vintage IC chips?

Thanks, any advice much appreciated!

There is an amateur radio club here in the Triad: Forsyth Amateur Radio Club

I have a friend who is a member, and I know they do hold swap meets as well as other events. Might be worth getting in touch.

I thought Radio Shack was still around. Aren't there stores in Cary, Morrisville, Wake Forest and Durham?

This is hit or miss but I have seen old electronics from NC State and other agencies here and you can bid online for some items:

NCDOA > State Surplus Property

Nothing like Fry's in NC, unfortunately. Online is the way to go though, retail mark up for the larger items is high.

I used to get catalogues from this place, but they are in the Chicago area. The catalogues were fun to read, and I occasionally bought craft supplies.

Baltimore, Philadelphia, & South Jersey used to be loaded with these places. It's been a long time since I was in the market for this stuff but you should check those areas to see if any survived the recession.

Every 2 weeks NC State has surplus sale on electronics and other things. The warehouse is on Ligon St. you can get there via Gorman or Blue Ridge

There is a sale tomorrow if you plan on checking it out.
