I think this a good question, what would y'all say? I'm tempted to pick the Triad at the core, also partially due to historical reasons. I've always thought Charlotte had more in common with Atlanta over the Triangle, too. However, I believe the Triangle is going down the same path Charlotte is going down at the same time.

Triad, definitely. Not only due to the multiple cities, but also Charlotte's center core is far more urban and built up than Raleigh's or Durham's. Light rail and streetcar, plus multiple pro sports sets Charlotte apart as well.

I'm going with the Triad: multinodal, multiple colleges and universities, tobacco legacy, etc

Triad and Triangle. Much more interaction(work, recreational, etc) between the two metros as well.

I'd also say it's more similar to the Triad. Also agree that Charlotte is more similar to Atlanta than the Triangle in terms of how it's laid out and its pattern of development.

Triad.

As far as Charlotte being similar to Atlanta, I can see how one could say that, but on the other hand Atlanta dominates Georgia. I just don't feel like Charlotte is in the same position here in NC.

Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham are about equal in terms of dominating the state, IMO.

It's true that you see more interaction between the Triangle and Triad. When you think about it, you can drive from Greensboro to Durham in less than an hour or so. From Raleigh, a drive to Charlotte could take closer to three hours. Personally, although I can't speak for everyone in the Triangle, I rarely visit Charlotte because I just don't have a need at all. I'll go up to Virginia for an amusement park over Carowinds, and I'm not the type to attend Panthers games or NASCAR races. Point is, I don't think Raleigh/Durham thinks of Charlotte too often and vice versa. I definitely think Charlotte is more similar to Atlanta, and there might even be more of a relationship between Charlotte and the SC Upstate than Charlotte and the Triangle. Besides the Triad, the Triangle is arguably more similar to the Richmond area and Northern Virginia. Count me in among the folks who say Charlotte holds more of a southern feel over the Triangle, too.

It snows in the Triad while it rains in the RTP. No comparison in airports and flights, rtp wins hands down. Triad closer to mountains, RTP to the beach. The RTP has Chapel Hill and the Triad has High Point, really!

Charlotte is home to the richest rednecks in the SE and compared to the RTP, the health care stinks.

Is the Triad really that big? I haven't been there yet, but it doesn't seem that big. As a recent transplant to NC, Raleigh and Charlotte seem like the only big-time cities in NC. So would you say that the Triangle has more in common with the Triad, but in terms of importance...its sister is Charlotte?
