Former NC resident here considering a move back to my home state. I was wondering about vehicle titling and tax.

Someone told me that I only have to pay $150 when titling a vehicle coming from out of state, while another person told me I would have to pay a 3% road tax. Which is it?

Will I also receive a property tax bill after registering my car (from what I remember, this was the case in the past)?

Lastly, my vehicle has a loan on it. Does NC still withhold titles for vehicles with loans/liens?

1. Its 3% highway use tax with a cap of $250 for an out of state vehicle.
2. You have to pay the property tax when you get your license plate now.
3. I think the lienholder (lender) keeps the title and sends it to you when you pay it off, but its been a while since I had a vehicle with a lien on it.

So you pay property tax at the license plate office?

Yesterday I had to re title and tag a car coming in from New Jersey. I was in and out of the Northgate location in 5 minutes unlike the vision test I had to take on S. Miami for my NC license. Wait time for that location in total was 2 1/2 hours.

I was told if I did not own the car outright to call the lien holder and have them send me a copy of the title front and back. Since the car is paid off in full all I had to do was hand in my NJ title.

I paid $380 in total to get a new title plates and registration. I also paid all taxes due which included $113 for property taxes. 2007 vehicle with 170K miles on it. No inspection on the vehicle for 13 months.

Thanks for the update. $380 out the door doesn't seem too bad, especially considering that includes property tax.
