Breastfeeding mother ordered to leave North Carolina court room | abc11.com

Mom was ordered to cover up and not to breastfeed in court. NC law protects breastfeeding in public, whether covered up or not.

Judges control their courtrooms. Do they control the right to breastfeed in public?

I am a big fan of breast feeding... but to WALK UP to the judge as defendant with a baby latched on.... well, that's disrespectful. It doesn't sound like the judge had a problem with feeding until she walked up to the bench with her blouse unbuttoned!

At the very least, it's impolite. And judges certainly police "manners" in a courtroom. It's not illegal to talk, but a judge can hold you in contempt for doing it in their court room...

At the very least, it's impolite, give the environment in most courtrooms. And judges certainly police "manners" in a courtroom. It's not illegal to talk, but a judge can hold you in contempt for doing it in their court room...
A lot of what I've seen from comments around this has to do with the judge and his ability to set courtroom rules.

But, the counter arguments have been around the State's protects of breastfeeding in public because it is protected by law.

I would not personally walk up to the bench breastfeeding unless my child was covered up along with my breast, but I tend to assume judges will call me out for anything they can find that's not 100% perfect, and I like winning court cases (I have been involved in a couple of minor ones... traffic, etc) and I surely would not want to minimize my chances.

It's an interesting debate.

No making a mess in your pants, either.

I wonder how exposed she was? There's quite a difference between covering with a blanket or shawl or just letting everything hang out.
