... despite being ranked below all of them in population?

NC's thread count also leads other states ranked ahead of it in population... Not saying there should be a correlation between a state's population and thread counts... but uh... hmmmmm...

I think North Carolina and Virginia are the two states where Northerners and Westerners feel are the most "Northern" southern states to move to. Obviously the attractions are lower cost of living in general, more seasonal weather, and short driving distances to beaches, mountains, lakes, etc...

The two states also seem to offer a much slower pace of life than some states where big cities reside, but yet, there is enough "city" in both states to satisfy those who love city and urban living.

And as someone else alluded to in another thread, a lot of conservatives probably flock to those two states (although Northern VA is more liberal and conservative), because of the popularity of Republican voting. That may not be as true for Virginia nowadays though.

You have a lot of people who are moving to North Carolina from out of state who know nothing about the state.

I'd hazard a guess that it has to do with NC being a more popular destination for potential relocation...NC is much more accessible than Texas to the 100 million people on the east coast. The west coast has more like 50 million, and 38 million of those already live in California. NY and FL, while popular and populated, are not seeing the same rates of migration as NC.

But rates don't count when you're counting raw number of people. The rates are higher in NC's cities because the cities are a smaller base. Texas is the state with the most people moving to it. California and Florida is up there, too.

We are a talkative bunch here

But if you notice, they never delete threads here, so it goes all the way back to the beginning of City-Data. I suspect if they ever updated the threads, or took only the past 3 years or so, when the swarms of "NC or Bust" people flocked here like they were in the mid '00s before the recession, especially, you would find different chat patterns.
