My husband and I are looking in the North Carolina or Virginia areas to retire. We visited the Pinehurst area this past summer and fell in love with area. We are not golfers. Does it make sense to retire there? Our plan is to have a fifth wheel trailer and travel a lot with our retirement home being our base. I will add that my husband is retired military and we have grandchildren that we are trying to be within a few hours of and this area is great for both of those factors. Our thinking is that the beaches and mountains would both be close to visit in our fifth wheel. Any thoughts about non golfers in the area or other possible locations?

IMO, it is hotter in the Sand Hills region than anywhere in the state in the Summer by 5 degrees.

I think Pinehurst is a gorgeous area, and there's plenty to see and do, even if you don't golf. If your husband is eligible for VA medical services, it is close to the Fayettville VA Hospital. You will also see many other retired military folks.

We looked at the Seven Lakes area because we wanted waterfront, but there are many other lakeside communities.

We are non golfers in the Pinehurst area. There are lots of us retired here.
You might be limited where you can park a 5th wheel trailer. Pinehurst and some of the surrounding towns have strict rules about what you can park in developments. If you find a place outside a development you should be OK.

I had to rent a spot for my car hauler when we first moved in. Quite a few places in this area to rent trailer and MH parking spots.

We have a neighbor with a fifth wheel and he parks it off site.

Have you looked at Seven Lakes community (1000 acre lake Auman) about 15 miles west of Pinehurst? They have a dedicated on site parking lot for not only boats but for trailers and MH's.

Good luck.

I would imagine prices in Pinehurst, with its being a "resort" area that caters to those who can afford to play golf (mostly), would be more expensive than other areas in the Sandhills.

My father lived at Seven Lakes for 20 years and it is a nice area, (but also probably not the cheapest part of the county). You didn't say anything about price, so it might not be an issue, just mentioning this. The areas for tourists for (wealthy) retirees are going to be the most expensive. Aberdeen is more of a "regular" town right there in the same vicinity.

Also, while it is geographically between mountains and beach, there is not really a nice "quick" way to get to the beach from that area--it involves a lot of back roads through little towns. Not sure about the mountains, but you could probably hop up towards Greensboro and get on 40 for that. But if you wanted to be an easy drive from the beach, you might look at something on the other side of Fayetteville.

We moved into a golf subdivision when we relocated to the Triad in 2011. I like the winding roads, rolling hills and openness of the air since it's not as densely packed (purely due to the land the course uses). I don't golf either, but that had no bearing into our decision.
