I have to disagree with u about the data centers...My dh is upper management in IT busines operations, bussiness development and he is in a data center here in NJ there are alot of HIGH postitions in DATA CENTERS...and according to the charlotte paper that it is NOT a done deal yet...
I have recently heard lots of "cons" about moving to the Raleigh area (from NYers) and I'm starting to have some reservations
I hear the school situation is awful and that they're at 180% capacity I also hear that there are a lot of infrastructure issues and that taxes & housing costs are going up, as are utilities!
Can someone who's made the move please shed some insight on these or any other negatives?
Thanks!
Edited to add: I also heard that you have to pay taxes on your car EVERY YEAR?! anything else that I should know about?
You would be amazed at how difficult the written test is to get your drivers license changed to an NC license.
Where in upstate NY? I live in Westchester and we are thinking of moving down there because it is so expensive to live where we are. I've lived in NY my whole life and I'm worried about Southern culture shock...what's your take?
Location: Some got six month some got one solid. But me and my buddies all got lifetime here

I'm from central New Jersey. I don't regret moving down here but I also can't wait to move back to New Jersey as well. It's a wonderful state but even living in a more "northernized" area such as Concord, it's still a way of life that I'm not accustomed to. It's simply not for me. New Jersey here we come.
I moved from northeast, but not from NY. I have NO desire to go back. However I do continue to wish to be somewhere else, yeah the grass IS greener somewhere else. So far it's OK here but maybe not for long. Maybe a couple of years, who knows. I'm trying to focus on the good things that NC has to offer and not get frustrated with the negatives, every place has its own negatives. But then again it would be nice if some things here were better. Like the food for example
Beware of that green grass; You know what fertilizer is made of.
We , are from NJ, and have just purchased 7 acres north of Hickory in a town of Taylorsville and cannot wait to move down.
We have met so many natives that have been so friendly and so welcoming to us. We have been down several times and have gone to church and people are very nice
I grew up in NY and don't regret the move here at all, I have been here for a year. Yes the cost of living is increasing, but at a much more reasonable rate than in the NE. The cost of living is still significantly lower than in NY and the taxes are way lower than up north. My car tax this year is $170 for a 2006 Xterra. Taxes on a 220,000 house in Chatham county are 2000 per year. Tax rates vary some, but you can find little tax shelter areas, for instance the neighborhood I rented in was in a tiny corner of Durham County where we only paid county taxes on not city, so taxes were 0.68 / $100 assessed.
Traffic is much better than when I lived in NJ, but it can get backed up during rush hour, that said there is minimal public transportation here. They do not have a train or rail system for commuting into RTP.
Schools are crowded in Wake County so many of the schools are on a year round schedule. But schools in Chatham and Orange counties are not as crowded. I work for the Chapel Hill Carrboro City School Dist and the classes are small and the education is great.
I've live in NY, NJ and VT and living here is better than all of those places put together. Shopping is convenient, and the weather is great!
