Yes, through downtown. I didn't expect the South to be so expensive. I understand the median income down there is much lower than here, yet I live in an area just like this up here. I'll have to look around at my options. Thanks for your suggestions.
Michigan is one of the cheapest real estate markets in the nation due to all the manufacturing lost and subsequent population loss. Demand has fallen off a cliff in the last 20 years.
Detroit's median income is $25K.
Asheville's median is $43K and Greenville is $41K.

We don't exactly live in Detroit, but that's what everyone up here anywhere near it says. I'm only 10 minutes away from it. We live in the suburbs. We're well above the median income listed here right now, and I still couldn't see us affording the few decent homes or apartments I've seen in Hilsborough so far. Whew! I was surprised. I'm planning on coming down there and spending a weekend in the area just looking around and asking questions, hopefully soon. Of course, the way housing prices are quickly increasing here, we would have to rule a lot out here, too. I feel like maybe I'd better buy, and quick, before it gets more expensive. lol
Folks who come to NC from the Northeast and California find our real estate prices to be bargains, but folks from the Midwest usually find housing to be more expensive. It all depends on where you're coming from.

You're quoted budget is a little more than half of what the majority of this country pays for a 2 bedroom apt.
I would suggest some of the suburban areas around Asheville. Asheville city proper is a bit expensive, but once you get out into the towns surrounding Asheville, it's much more affordable. Black Mountain, Marshall, Mars Hill, Flat Rock, Hendersonvile, Weaverville, and Waynesville come to mind. Affordable and nice downtowns, yet close enough to Asheville to enjoy the amenities you're looking for.
