We are planning on purchasing a small vacation home in the mountains, living there for 5 months during the year. Do we file NC state income tax???? Will not work in NC - retired seniors. Thanks.

No, you are considered a nonresident if you are legal resident of another state. A nonresident is only required to report income received from services performed in North Carolina or from tangible property located in this state.

Do you tag your cars here in NC, what state is your driver's license issued, what about car insurance? If you are claiming NC as your primary residence, you are supposed to pay taxes here. However, if all of this is registered in a different state, and you live here less than 6 months you'll be ok.

I am hearing that getting insurance on a vacation home in NC is tricky. Can anyone advise on this? I've heard that I must be in the NC home (vacation home, out of state for me) 2 days a week to qualify. This is rather interesting if true.
