NC is fine, it is the state government that is the problem and are trying to ruin the state. IMO, SC is a lot more business friendly than NC and at this point seems more progressive. Not much difference between Eastern NC and most of SC except for the license plates.

North Carolina has made dramatic improvements to their tax code since 2013. They have gone from one of the least business-friendly states to one of the most business-friendly states. Income tax rates are set to fall yet again next year to 5.5%.

It is these reasons why NC typically crushes the "Top 10" style lists for opportunity. Charlotte and Raleigh are typically always found in the top ten. You will find Austin ranked high as well, as will you Dallas and Houston. Why? Because Texas is extremely business friendly and has no income tax. Texas is ahead of NC, but NC is trying to follow in its footsteps.

"Progressive" typically means anti-business. Check out your "progressive" states. New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland - you'll typically find them in the Top 10 "Worst" lists. There is a reason why people are fleeing those states and moving south, and it's because they're fleeing the prisons that are "progressive" states. NC has actually been shrinking its government stranglehold, and it's why the state has seen 1,000,000 people recently transition within its borders. NC government is one of the only governments that seems to be moving in the right direction these days.

Maybe you'd better fit in in the Northeast?

North Carolina's idiot legislature is great for reducing state income tax which benefits the wealthy the most ...and then sticking it to the poor and middle-class residents in the form of "taxes and fees". A sales tax on my electric bill - what a crock of you-know-what! Next, they'll want sales tax on your hospital bill!!!

"Conservative" in business, means "anti-worker" with the average worker getting paid a lot less than in the states you mentioned and they have little to no worker's rights. North Carolina never seem to make the Top 10 States Happiest Employees list!

Many people have moved to NC because of it's cheap housing and property taxes. But cheaper doesn't necessarily mean better. Mcdonald's is cheaper than Ruth's Chris Steak House. Charlotte is cheaper than San Francisco!

Perhaps, with the shrinking of the middle class, North Carolina is a better fit for those who have fallen a few rungs down the economic ladder from the higher and pricier rungs of the Northeast and California. If you're so enamored with NC, you'll absolutely love Mississippi, West Virginia and Alabama!

According to Forbes, NC is the #2 best state for business.

Forbes Welcome

Tax Foundation did a huge expose on the dramatic tax reform. I strongly recommend everyone read North Carolina Illustrated. The improvements to the state's economy have been dramatic and NC is poised to be one of the most successful states in the US.

I am acutely aware of actual facts. Most people are too partisan to actually research. It is a shame that people are blinded by emotion. There are so many fantastic things happening in NC right now. I fear this ignorance will lead to the right people being kicked out and the wrong people embraced.

Please read my post above this one. NC has never been more pro-business, which is why people are flocking to NC in droves. It is the place to be for the middle class worker. R-D and Charlotte top virtually every "10 Best" list, and their business climate is one of the best in the country.

I suggest you read the Tax Foundation piece to better understand the positive changes.

NC government is one of the few governments in the US actually affecting positive change to their state. More accurately, the ignorant constituency is out to ruin NC. NC is one of the fastest progressing states in the US.

People were flocking to North Carolina years before the Republicans took over the NC legislature. I have previously read these articles ...and even if North Carolina is #2 in the business climate rankings, that doesn't mean it's a middle-class paradise. In fact it may be just the opposite! Low-wage employees generally aren't happy and productive employees. The lowest number of union employees of any state isn't anything I'd brag about. These business-obsessed writers extol how much cheaper wages are in NC! Basically if you like a compliant, and passive work force look no farther! Forest Gump works here!

It seems the Republican-dominated NC legislature is hell-bent on implementing measures that will result in an outcome just like the state of Kansas with their right-wing legislature, is now experiencing. The Kansas legislature and the governor, former Senator Sam Brownback, cut taxes on businesses and high-income individuals so much, that the state doesn't have enough money to run schools (no toilet paper in some schools - have your kid bring some from home!) and state budgets for social services can't cover people who desperately need them. The job gains from tax cuts that were supposed to attract new companies to the state haven't materialized and those increased revenues from all these new businesses are non-existent!

New, disastrous Kansas job loss exposes pure folly of Gov. Sam Brownback

Even the proposed teacher pay increase may not stop the decline of education in North Carolina. Teachers are still quitting in droves and new college students are avoiding the Education Major like the plague. States that produce students as "dumb as a bag of rocks" aren't likely to produce a new Silicon Valley anytime soon. There are vast swaths of North Carolina where new businesses will never go - due to poor schools. Throw in the HB2 controversy and the NC legislature is fast making this beautiful state a drive-around, fly-over area!

North Carolina has many virtues. It's geography is very impressive and I've met people here who'd give some saints a good run for the money! But the NC legislature is not anything this state should be proud of!

The NC legislature is doing a very good job. You should be thrilled you have such good leadership. As a PA resident, our taxes are skyrocketing. Highest gas tax in the US, they just added a lottery tax, the cigarette tax is being raised substantially and digital downloads are now taxable. Meanwhile, in North Carolina:

Quote:
North Carolina Surplus Triggers Corporate Tax Cut: The state budget director says higher-than-expected tax revenues mean the last scheduled cut from 4 percent to 3 percent will now take place, effective in 2017. The triggered cut was part of the 2013-15 tax reform that lowered individual taxes, eliminated many credits and deductions as well as the estate tax, broadened the sales tax, and cut business taxes. I don't know if you understand this or not, but the government cannot DO anything for you. All the government can do is set you up for success, or set you up for failure. NC is doing a fantastic job of setting their citizens up for success: they are allowing you to keep as much of your paycheck as possible. What you determine to do with that is up to you.

Folks that are struggling in such an environment have no one else but themselves to blame. You are blessed with one of the best systems in the nation, but are you angry because someone isn't putting in the work for you? How are you going to take advantage of the system and the tax advantages you have? Through continuing education? Perhaps you'll design something unique and file a simple $150 provisional patent, then try to license out that design? Will you take your current degree and expand your qualifications: maybe become a project management professional or get a professional engineering license? I mean you have a very rare opportunity, here. You have a state that wants to give you more of your money! All you have to do is find a way to earn more of it! That should be easy, because you can take that newfound money and invest it in yourself.

The "middle class" struggles because they would rather get home, sit on the couch and watch sports. They won't invest in themselves. Do you expect to increase your income by voting for social programs to take care of you? Or are you gonna work for it? If your attitude is the former, you'll always struggle.

Success is a frame of mind, and NC has done everything it could since 2013 to promote success. You're very lucky, if you choose to see it that way.

People who are flocking to NC generally have a successful attitude. They're moving there to take advantage of the superior system. Will you also adopt that positive mindset and take advantage of the system? Or will you sit there, do nothing and complain about partisan politics?

Folks/companies have been relocating to the South in droves since the late 60s to take advantage of business/tax incentives, cheaper labor, real estate, warmer climate, etc. etc. Progressive leaders like Terry Sanford, Jim Hunt, etc invested heavily into the educational system, especially in the community college and university systems to create a large pool of intellectual and trade workers to attract companies...RTP, etc. Even then, the old right wing guard and others opposed many of those progressive policies and investments.

The positive momentum created by the aforementioned leaders has been in place for decades and the only thing that could stymie that growth is leadership that uses a backwoods social agenda to depict the state as backwater. It has already cost the state 1000s of jobs, business, etc which is insane but generally overlooked by outsiders as a short-term blip on the radar due to NC garnering such a positive and progressive perception from historical leadership. Not McCrory and team.

The current tax structure is indeed a boom for a certain segment of NCn's, generally those in the upper income bracket. The notion that the bulk of folk defined as the working and middle class are shiftless and lazy is absurd. The new tax structure is a bait and switch tactic to shift the burden and levy the tax in other form/ways. Sadly, that burden is assigned to the working class and others without the power and lobbyist to control the tax structure. They'll continue to shift that burden or tax structure to the working class and middle class until that corporate tax is essentially null and void, all the while fleecing those without any means or power to do a damn thing about it.
