My 3rd grader has a "state fair " project for her class. She is working on a big state report. She chose North Carolina as we are moving to Charlotte by June. At the end of the project, the kids put on a "state fair" where they each have a table for their state. She is supposed to give out one food item and one non food item as souvineirs. Any ideas about what inexpensive items she could give out to represent the state?
Thanks in advance!

You can get a bag of 100 (1.5" x 1") toothpick NC state flags for less than 10 bucks or raw cotton for around a 75 cents a boll. Kids from non-cotton farming states probably have never seen raw unprocessed cotton before.

Salem Lights ? I hear you can get a pack of 20 for around $4.00.

LOL, sorry, I'm just joking!

The cotton idea is good for a non food item. For a food item, I would consider corn (which is big at the fair too). They have stands just for roasted corn. Also anything with pork is very native to NC, but I don't know how excited 3rd graders will be about a pork chop. If you can get your hands on some Moravian cookies, those are native to NC (The Moravians in Wintson Salem make them, especially at Christmas).
Oh...and Pepsi! Pepsi is an NC product!

For food products made in North Carolina you might want to consider shelled peanuts
boiled peanuts are alot cheaper than roasted. You can buy it buy the bag and put some in serving dish to make it go further and share the history of the peanut in North Carolina
Here is one of many local stores you can order online Roasted Peanuts - Roasted in the shell Peanuts

I would also explore North Carolina General Store for Ideas. Lance Crackers,d Mt. Olive Pickles, Texas Pete, Butterball Turkey, and NC honey are some companies in NC

We moved to NC a year ago...Cheerwine was a big hit with me. It would be easy to put a small sip in those little cups and the kids would love it--so would the adults. Now that probably isn't consifered a "food" so I'd check into that. Another food I found here that was quite interesting and being from out of state was how many places serve "Hushpuppies". Those also include the corn which is big here. I had never even heard of these in CA. They would be easy and inexpensive to serve people and the kids would probably like those too. These are two items I found to be unique to this area. Then there is another drink--sweet tea--again, don't know if that would be considered a food item. Good luck---

Regarding the non-food item...car racing is also big here..maybe you could contact one of the race teams and they could send you a bag of those little souvineir cars and maybe they won't charge you or very little if you explain what it is for. I don't really know how they work but it may be worth a try! I also think for the non-food the cotton idea is great too!!
