Hey all,

My boyfriend and I are looking to move from Southwest Florida to NC. Specifically we are looking at Raleigh and Greensboro as we have heard a lot of nice things about both cities and have had people recommend both cities to us from this forum. We plan on visiting next year to both cities.

So here is my question - has anyone moved from SWFL or Florida in general to either of these cities? What is your feedback? Do you like one over the other? Is there a large difference in the cost of living? Looking back in previous posts there hasn't been an updated feedback about moving from Florida to NC in a while and I wanted to know if things have changed much since the last time anyone posted about this.

Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

It depends on what you're looking for, and you haven't given much to go on. I don't think the "from FL" part is all that relevant, and people are moving to NC from everywhere.

You can target your questions better by including info such as what kind of jobs you'd be looking for, what size city you're looking for, budget, expectations, what you know about the cities that makes you want to move (other than generic "they're said to be good places to move to"), etc. We don't know you, so we can't tell you which suits your needs better without knowing a lot more about what your needs ARE.

City-Data has pages on every city:

Greensboro

//www.city-data.com/city/Raleig...-Carolina.html

And of course there are Wikipedia and other reference sites for basic knowledge of a city.

Also, you can get more specific info about Raleigh in the Triangle subforum and about Greensboro in the Triad subforum, one level down from this one.

If you are used to the beach you'll want Raleigh as it's only 2 hours away. Entertainment, quality of life, one of the highest percentages of residents with at least a bachelor's degree, food scene, college football/basketball + Canes, state fair, and Raleigh is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the entire country. (forbes, money, etc.) Triangle > Triad

Thank you. The quality of life and education level are fairly important to us, where we live now the education level is not the greatest and it is becoming more apparent over the years. We go to the beach approximately once every two months, the beach being 2 hours away wouldn't be too bad then. One of the biggest things we both miss since moving to Florida 3 years ago is forests and wildlife... from what I have seen Raleigh definitely has a lot of trees, what about the wildlife? What type of wildlife is typical in Raleigh?

There might not be much in Raleigh except the mice, squirrels, rabbits, foxes and coyotes. However, Chatham County has a large population of white-tailed deer.

I have posted before in this forum, many of these answers we already have. From previous posts we know that Raleigh or Greensboro would better suit us. What I am trying to find out is what people have for feedback on these cities. Would love to hear from people from Florida but anyone else would be appreciated too. What feedback I am looking for exactly would be: Cost of living (electricity bills, water bills, grocery, etc), climate (is it as hot and humid in summer as Florida? Winter isn't a big deal we are from Wisconsin originally), friendliness of people (how friendly are people in each city? Native Floridians are pretty friendly people).

As for general information about us. We are 23/24, originally from WI living in FL since 2013. Have 3 cats, 1 dog (need to have somewhere like a dog park for the dog, don't really have much of those here). We could care less for any of the club or late night scenes. My boyfriend works at CarMax, he would be able to transfer to another store which both cities have. I graduated from college with a B.S. in Marine Science with minors in Biology and Geology. I currently work for the Florida Fish and Wildlife here in Florida and could find jobs in fields similar to that, zoos, and/or aquariums. As it is Marine Science I do not actually have to be near a source of saltwater I can work with freshwater as well. We like living near the city but not quite in the heart of the city, we don't mind driving a little. Would prefer to be somewhere with more trees and a landscape, we currently live somewhere that really doesn't have either. Much of Florida is the same way, becoming more and more of a concrete jungle each year. Hopefully this information gives a better in depth profile of us and what we are looking for.

Are the coyotes ever a problem in Raleigh? Coyotes here in Florida are becoming a very big problem with people losing their pets from coyotes snatching them off of lanais and from peoples yards. So there is not much for any large wildlife? Thank you goldenage1

We moved from S. FL 10 years ago and love it. We live in Clayton which is SE of Raleigh. Cost of living in Clayton is cheaper than the Raleigh market and definitely cheaper than S.FL.
Like "tailsock" said there's much more to do here than Greensboro. Please look at the city-data information for each town. That's where I looked when I was comparing where to live. Raleigh is called the "city of oaks" and that's why there's that many trees. I love the fact that I can live among the trees and not surrounded by concrete. Though there are a lot of builders starting to clear trees and build tight communities to make more money. The market is hot right now so depending on what your price range is will also vary on where in the area you will settle.
Raleigh is 2 hrs to the beach and about 3 to the mountains so it's perfect if you want both. I love the fact that I can travel in all directions from where we live. I'm only 15 min to I-95 so traveling north or south is advantageous as well.
I'm happy to share my experience with you. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your feedback!! It is good to hear someone from South Florida moving and liking North Carolina. I completely understand what you mean with being surrounded by concrete, that is how we feel here now. It is only getting worse even in the areas that used to have a lot of trees. Hopefully when the opportunity arises we will be able to move out of Florida and hopefully to somewhere in North Carolina like Raleigh or Greensboro. Again, thank you for the feedback!!
