Looks like we are seeing plenty of development around Durham and Greensboro's ballpark. A downtown ballpark is also in the works for Fayetteville. Raleigh will be the only major city in North Carolina without a downtown ballpark.

(Durham) Durham Bulls Athletic Park - opened in 1995

(Greensboro) NewBridge Bank Park - opened in 2005

(Winston-Salem) BB&T Ballpark - opened in 2010

(Charlotte) BB&T Ballpark - opened in 2014

Raleigh proper is too close to Durham to build a Minor League ballpark.

Winston-Salem's park is still my favorite out of Zebulon, Kinston, Durham, Greensboro, W-S (the ones I've visited - haven't been to Charlotte). But they're all great. I'm looking forward to the upcoming development adjacent to the stadium in W-S.

What are the rules of this? How does Greensboro and Winston-Salem both have downtown parks being just 26 miles apart? I assumed Raleigh didn't have one because the Mudcats play in Zebulon more so than the Bulls in Durham.

I guess rules are a little different for AAA much like major league baseball.

Yeah, I'd like to know exactly what the Bulls territorial rights are. It gets referred to a lot, but I've never seen or heard anything definitive on it, and searching on the internet doesn't turn up much.

Well, I may have just answered my own question. I just found this article:

http://www.nytimes.com/1989/01/23/sp...mpetition.html

which says, in part, that minor league territorial rights extend 35 miles from the existing teams home plate, to the closest city limit line of the city wanting a team. It also says the rule used to be 10 miles, so I assume that's why G'boro and W-S both have teams.

It's amazing how dated a 2 year old aerial of Charlotte has become. There are 4 towers missing from the OP's link. 5 towers if we count the one going up beside the Westin.

Interesting. However, the Charlotte Knights and Kannapolis Intimidators are only 28 miles apart.

Since they are both affiliated with the White Sox, perhaps the parent team waived the 35 mile rule?
