Do you want big city or small city. That is the actual question. Both hospitals are fine. Duke is world-class. Vidant should be able to take care of anything you need. If they can't you're a 30min flight from Duke/UNC.

Small or big cities don't matter. We generally stay inside most of the time. We do like Costco, Sam's Club and Walmart's. I'm a city slicker and my wife is really a country girl by nature. My wife don't like to drive, she can get lost just driving around the block. No joke!

Well, Durham has a Costco and Greenville doesn't, if that makes your decision any easier.

I went to ECU and lived in Greenville and the surrounding area for 4 years. I loved it as a student, but I honestly don't know if I could live there as a working professional. My colleagues and friends from school said the same thing.

If Greenville was in the same location as Wilson, I think it would be the perfect location because it's still close enough to Raleigh for a quick shopping trip.

My biggest gripe with Greenville was just the overall atmosphere. Besides students, you have people who work for the hospital, ECU, and public schools. But everyone else is low-income and doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the crowd. The crime is also rather high for a college town. I've lived in two college towns since Greenville (Iowa City, IA and Columbia, MO) and the crime rate and atmosphere was much better than Greenville.

I think we are ruling out Greenville. I heard from many people about the crime rate. I think we will visit Durham on the way up to DC metro for Christmas. I think we will spend a couple of days in Durham.

Thanks for your input.

And thanks to all for their input.

Look for something on the north side of Durham (north of I-85). Close to the highway, Duke Hospital, Costco, Wal-Mart, and country drives are nearby.

Check to see if your health insurance will cover Duke.

If you don't live in the ghetto, you will be fine. And that's for both Durham and Greenville. Durham has the higher crime rate of the Triangle too.

Before you rule out Greenville don't forget next door is Winterville NC, the 4th safest place to live in NC.

Winterville is lovely but I would not want to live in Greenville proper (I have lived in Winterville for many years). Winterville actually would not be a bad place to retire, but after many bad experiences and seeing others have the same I am not a fan of Vidant. If medical care is of concern, I would rather be near Duke. I make the two hour trip to Duke for some things now.
