Baywood is a great neighborhood--no need for gates out here "east of the river." No HOA's to deal with. And Cape Fear High School is one of the better high schools in the county. Terry Sanford has had A LOT of turmoil this year and the administration has just been replaced. Cape Fear has a nationally known Marching Band and internationally ranked Winter Guard, great athletics program and you won't find teachers or administrators who care any more about their kids than the ones at Cape Fear!!! The closest Walmart is the one on 301 (not such a pretty ride--but it's clean, well-organized, and newer), or the one on Ramsey Street, which is a short ride up I-295. Food Lion is close by in Stedman (near the high school), in a small shopping center. A LOT less crime out our way, for sure.

Feel free to ask me more about our area!

Thanks for the input LRoyal. Right now we're looking in Southern Pines and those areas out West. Just trying to distance ourselves with the crime of the city. But we did like Baywood when we visited. Just concerned that if my wife has to go shopping by herself that she is safe wherever we are living.

I really don't think you have to worry excessively about your wife shopping by herself in Fayetteville. I certainly never have been concerned for my safety when I have gone shopping there and I didn't worry for my 80 yr old mom when she did her grocery shopping either. If you're in a good part of town (and there are many) I just don't think that crime is a huge deal. There is definitely some property crime, but there are break-ins everywhere, even in Pinehurst and Southern Pines and Hope Mills and Grays Creek. Over the years I have known folks who were broken into, but I've never known anyone who was a victim of violent crime in Fayetteville. Most violent crime isn't random and if you're not hanging out with the wrong people in the wrong places chances are good that you will never see it.

There are a lot of things I don't love about Fayetteville and I would never choose to live there again, but that's more because it's boring and lacks the vibrancy of the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) and less about crime. I hope the new ballpark sparks some more life into downtown. They're trying to get things going, but it's hard when there's a "military-town-with-crime-and-poverty-problem" reputation to overcome and Raleigh and Charlotte have so much energy and excitement and good jobs bringing in so many newcomers. Ain't a whole lot of love left over for Fayetteville.

Pinehurst and Southern Pines are attractive areas, too, if that suits you better. It's a little sleepy for me, but good medical care there.

Just avoid the Walmart on Skibo road! The area around that Walmart is so bad, that it's the only Walmart in the city that isn't open 24 hours.

I know many people who live in SP, as well as Vass. They moved to those places to get away from Fayetteville. They are happy with the area. One friend has been trying to convince us to move to Pinehurst, but we've already found a new place in Wake County.
