Truth be told, Republicans won in 2010 by running in Democrat drawn districts, they won fair and square. I do not recall any of these leftist groups prior to 2010 in NC suing over maps favoring Democrats. In the 90's, NC Democrats gerrymandered maps by race to favor their party.
I think the Supreme Court will at the least grant a stay in NC to hold their elections as they currently are.
This argument has cropped up hundreds of times and been shot down hundreds of times.
-Republicans had split control of the House in 2000 and had some say in drawing the districts that were used until 2010.
-NC Democrats are not 'leftist' and never have been. Conservative rural democrats used gerrymandering to silence progressives in the cities for decades.

The U.S. Supreme Court has granted a stay requested by the General Assembly. The elections will be held in the original districts drawn by the G.A.
What the hell? What was the reasoning behind this level of stupidity?
It's because there are other similar cases up that are also about gerrymandering and their decision on those cases, particular the Wisconsin case, will likely impact NC's situation.
Quote:
Republican lawmakers urged the panel of judges to stay its ruling while the Supreme Court considered partisan gerrymandering cases from Wisconsin and Maryland.
They argued that there was “an extremely high likelihood” that in one or both of those cases, the high court’s ruling would make it necessary for the panel of judges considering any new North Carolina map to “revisit” its decision.
The Supreme Court’s move was expected and not particularly telling. The court, which is considering two other major tests of partisan gerrymandering, has granted stays in similar settings. Its decisions in the pending cases, from Wisconsin and Maryland, are likely to effectively decide the North Carolina case, too.

J. Michael Bitzer, a political scientist at Catawba College, near Charlotte, said the Supreme Court’s order was an important, if perhaps temporary, win for Republicans in North Carolina.
“Certainly, Republicans will view this as a victory but probably a short-term victory,” he said. “They certainly dodged a bullet tonight. The question is: ‘How long do we have before the Wisconsin decision comes down, and what kind of impact will that have on 2018’s elections?’”
In October, the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case from Wisconsin. The trial court in that case had struck down a voting map for the State Assembly as an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.
The Supreme Court has also agreed to decide whether Maryland Democrats crossed a constitutional line by redrawing House districts to flip a Republican-held seat to Democratic control.
In asking the Supreme Court to block the North Carolina ruling, state lawmakers said the trial court had made legal errors and unreasonable demands, notably in ordering new congressional maps to be drawn by Jan. 24.
