“do not dispute that the General Assembly intended for the 2016 Plan to favor supporters of Republican candidates and disfavor supporters of non-Republican candidates. Nor could they. The Republican-controlled North Carolina General Assembly expressly directed the legislators and consultant responsible for drawing the 2016 Plan to rely on ‘political data’ — past election results specifying whether, and to what extent, particular voting districts had favored Republican or Democratic candidates, and therefore were likely to do so in the future — to draw a districting plan that would ensure Republican candidates would prevail in the vast majority of the state’s congressional districts.”
Both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have used gerrymandering. It would be nice to designate districts based on population instead of political affiliation.
"A majority of the judges also agreed the panel would hire a redistricting expert to draw replacement boundaries if the legislature won't" by the end of this month. Should be fun seeing if and how the Republicans in the General Assembly handle this latest mess on their end.

While this is technically true, it is misleading as the motives are quite different. Democratic gerrymandering was done in an attempt to address civil rights concerns, black voter dilution, and compliance with the Voting Rights Act under threats from the Justice Dept. It was not done to give Democrats an advantage, and it is in no way comparable to what the Republicans have done.

Not in Maryland. It was expressly stated by those drawing the lines that the purpose of the last two redistrictings (2000, 2010) was to make the Congressional delegation 100% Democrat.
And the Court which reviewed the first one approved it.

I wasn't " attempting to hijack" but responding to the poster who stated that Democrats gerrymandered for altruistic reasons. If that's "off topic" then ask it be deleted.
Of course, you agreed with that little bit of misinformation so I'm not surprised you're a "rule quoter".

Which was not stated, it was generic Democrats. Which is pertinent since this will likely be a decision applied nationally.
