Hi all,
I just moved to NC. (2018). I work in Duluth MN and keep a car in Duluth. This car has never been in NC.
or was it ever going to see NC. I check into registering it up there, but I would need a home address. My question is there anyway to avoid driving across 5 or 6 states for a 10 min inspection just to drive right back up to MN. Any Help Thanx

Try using your work address in MN or renting a PO box there. Or use a relative's or friend's address there.

Is it titled in MN and insured/registered there?
That would sure be more convenient (not having out of state tags etc).

This is where you lose me... up there (to me) means MN.

Do you intend to change the TITLE and registration on that MN car to NC?
(as you're supposed to - I should add)

Assuming so... the nonsense NC inspection is the least of it all.

I suggest waiting until you actually move to NC to do the Title (and pay the tax),
then change the insurance and get the inspection and then NC tags.

iirc.. NC will expect you to change your drivers license first too.

So is the car registered in NC or MN? Your wording is very confusing.

I think OP means he lives in NC, but works a lot in Duluth, so he wants to keep a car up there. He wants to register it in Minnesota, but they won't let him unless he has a home address there. He has a home address in NC, but that would require driving the car all the way down to NC for an inspection.

OP, where are you storing the car in Minnesota? Can you just use that address?

You can get the car registered in NC without an inspection. The car does not have to be here. (See #17)

Emissions testing is a little confusing. #15 says you can get an emissions inspection done in another state, but it doesn't say what you have to do if your North Carolina county doesn't require emissions testing. And I see MN doesn't do emissions testing, so I guess you could get it done in Wisconsin?

Really, you should call NC DMV with these questions. 919-715-7000.
