I recently moved to North Carolina, and I noticed that one has to pay county taxes and city taxes.

I'm not used to this.

Can anyone tell me why? If you live in the City, what does the county you live in do with their portion of the taxes.

I don't see where the county in which I live, does anything for the City.

Thanks for anyone's help.

Generally speaking, county governments maintain and finance things like:

Emergency Services (Fire, EMT & Police Protection)
Hospitals
Law Enforcement
Recreation Facilities
Social Services
Courts
Zoning
Solid Waste Disposal
Public Health
Soil & Water Conservation
Public Libraries
Planning
Economic Development
Information Systems
Animal Services
Building Services

part of the taxes go to schools, and secondary county roads, health department, agricultural department, county parks, public libraries, landfills, sheriff department, senior services, county animal control and shelters, social services, are just a few.
What county are you located and we could provide a better list?

Cause they can
Remember this is NC, the state that has never seen a tax or fee that they didn't love.
