Looking to move to North Carolina in the next two years. We would like to be in a good school district for our kids as well as low crime rates. We want to be in an affordable area. Anyone have any cities and schools they would recommend in the North Carolina area?

Your questions is too overly broad to provide a meaningful answer. There are many, many good school districts in NC. Can you provide more context and background on your move? Where are you coming from? Do you like it? Why or why not?Why are you moving? Will you be looking for a job? What is your occupation/industry? Will you work from home? Do you want to live near the beaches or mountains or neither? What kind of amenities are important to you? What is your budget for a house?

Very true. Currently, we reside in Columbus, OH. Top reason for moving is the weather!! We would like to be near Raleigh, NC. We would also like to be no more than 1-2 hours from the beach. We are trying to decide on moving in the next two years, so the plan is to start job searching soon. The job market here is very saturated. We are both in Software Analysts positions.

Ok, great. I'd definitely recommend starting you consider the Raleigh/Cary/Holly Springs area. You should probably start by reading this "sticky":

//www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...des-local.html

Then read through the Raleigh area forum:

//www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...pel-hill-cary/

You will find lots of threads asking very similar questions to yours, such as:

//www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...-concerns.html

//www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...d-you-put.html
//www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...they-move.html

After you digest some of that, I'd go to the Raleigh area forum and ask some specific questions.

Realistically, much of Raleigh is more like 2.5 to 3 hours to the beach. But if you would like to be closer, the outer suburbs like Clayton, Wendell and Zebulon would work.

The trade-off with outer suburbs is you might be further from job locations. Much of the software job market would be centered around the Research Triangle Park.

You might also look at Greenville which has a university and about 80,000 people. It is trying to attract more tech industry.

3 hours gets you to Myrtle. 2 hours can get you to Wrightsville.

Yeah, it's 2 hrs to the beach from Raleigh. It's a little under 3 hrs from Chapel Hill and we're 45 min west of Raleigh. We take day trips down to Wrightsville, Carolina Beach and Topsail sometimes.
