My job might be transferring my family to Pembroke, NC. We currently live in Southern California. We know we are in for a big culture shock, but we are ready to get out of here. We have a 4 yr old son who will be starting school soon, so the schools are a big concern. Also, we will have to find somewhere to rent for a while. We were wondering what the Lumberton, Hope Mills and Fayetteville are like. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No idea about that area of NC. We are in Charlotte. But we did move from SoCal 3 years ago.

Lumberton is a small city in Robeson county in the eastern part of the state. I have family that lives there. Its not really growing but not losing population either. Lumberton has a small one story mall.....plenty of major food chains, and is right off of interstate 95. Has its bad areas along with mostly good areas. Surrounding Lumberton is largely rural areas and tobacco and cotton fields.

I can't help you with your questions but I can tell you from a born and raised Califorian...we had little if any culture shock. The people are very friendly and the weather is not much different from CA. I have been here a year now and my son and family are following me this year. It's like CA 20 years ago. Children are a big deal here---the people seem to be very involved with their children which is a pleasant change from CA. It is different but in a very good way. I live out in a very rural area so the change is different but so welcomed!! Good luck and this is a great place to raise your children!!

I keep reading about the "bad areas". Are there more than normal? Or is it like very other city, they have thier good and bad areas. It seems like the bad areas are more emphasized here.

As a native North Carolinian who now lives in California. I cannot imagine a bigger culture shock than moving from Southern California to Lumberton. Unless you live in South Central or a similar environment, than Lumberton will not be a good move. The people moving from cultured places to NC and champion it are those moving to the triangle or Asheville or Charlotte (maybe). Lumberton, sorry to all the Lumbies out there, is a pit. There are places much more expensive and much less livable in LA than anywhere in NC. But if I were to make a list of places in NC not to move, Lumberton would be high on the list. Your employer must be desperate.
