Only way you are allowed to skip renewal is if the cars tires are removed and plates turned in.

If you move before the year is up you are able to turn in plates and get prorated fees/taxes paid back. I’d think that would be the better idea. Or just sell for scrap since it seems it’s not even working.

You can't renew your registration without getting an inspection.

Don't inspect or register your car. If you want to renew later, jump it and see if it's throwing any codes, you'll know because the check engine light is on as well. A code reader is under $15 from Amazon and works with free apps for your phone.

Then when you need to register it go get it inspected.

My car is a 1995 and it passes inspection every year. No issues. Just because cars are old doesn't mean they can't pass inspection. Is your car current with inspections and registrations?

If you turn in the plates you'd have to pay the new registration taxes to get new plates.
