Considering a relocation to NC from NY in the coming years. I currently work for a local government employer in the NYS retirement system, but don't know if we will be able to stick it out here for 22 more years to actually retire out of NY.

Has anyone in the forum worked for another state and then moved to employment in the NC state pension, and been able to either receive service credit or buy service credit for previous out of state service? State retirement website indicates it could be possible, just looking for stories from people with personal experience with it.

Yes. I've done it. I purchased about 2 1/2 years of service from my time working for a local government in Virgina, and added it to my service time in the NC state retirement system.

Are you vested in NY?

Then I don't think it would be worthwhile to purchase the service to transfer to NC system, and it may not even be possible. If you leave it as is, you'll simply get a check from the NY pension, and one from NC (assuming you move and get vested in the NC system). Frankly the NY pension is probably more generous than NC, although I don't know how solid it is. The NC system is in pretty good financial shape.
