Citing that that "license plates bearing the Confederate battle flag have the potential to offend those who view them," the NC DMV has banned the symbol on all new plates effective the start of this year. This primarily affects the North Carolina Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans (“SCV”), which DMV will continue to recognize as a civic organization entitled to the issuance of a specialty plate. "However, SCV’s classification as a civic organization does not entitle it to dictate the contents of the government speech on that specialty plate," added the DMV.

NC Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesman Frank Powell said the group believes the change is illegal. He said the SCV's legal team is reviewing options.

NC previously was among nine states with Confederate flag tags.

I think there has already been a Supreme Court case that states have the right to regulate political speech appearing on license plates. (A group had sufficient numbers to get a phrase like "Choose Life" or something like that submitted as a proposal for a special plate, and that got denied and litigated.)

Like those statues that should never have been put up in the first place...
soon the entire range of these things will all be gone. Can't come too soon.

Its about time, now the other southern states need to do this. I am proud that NC has taken this step joining VA and MD.

The state has absolutely no obligation to accommodate this logo on an official license plate to appease whoever demands that it be used. As someone else mentioned, this has already been litigated by SCOTUS.

I sure wouldn't want this on my vehicle or any other property because it doesn't represent my values, but I have no doubt that people who would have ordered such a plate will put a similar logo on their vehicle and as long as it doesn't violate traffic laws, nothing is legally stopping them. Notice I said nothing is legally stopping them. That doesn't mean there aren't consequences just like there are consequences for wearing a "kiss my junk" T-shirt to a professional job interview. Here's an example of how one contractor lost a good customer because of choosing to use their 1st amendment right in a way that was off putting to their customer:

Surprised that it even existed, what a shame. Glad NC is getting rid of it. Now please get rid of the "In God We Trust" plate from being a default plate. It should be by choice. I do not want to get it just cause I bought a car from a dealer. A default plate should be simple, not religious, political or whatever. Have NC's official motto on top if you need it, and just the number. All other inspirational stuff shouldn't be on the default plate. I personally do not like the "first in freedom" one either; it's ironic that a former slave state has that on their plate. I know the history, do not come at me with "but it's about the Declaration of Independence... etc", I am just sayin'.... the default plates have no business being fancy or carry any ideological message. It's just a number. I paid for my cute smoky bear plate, I will again if needed. But, if not, this state shouldn't be telling me what I trust in and what I do not.

^^^ Funny how people see “In God We Trust” being a problem that needs to be addressed - but not the content on their heavily filtered and censored social media accounts and media outlets, or the mind and media control devices entering into their homes now.

“We have a problem with license plates ... but not with the world’s most powerful and wealthy individuals (Bezos, Zuckerberg and such) and their deeply rooted control over every aspect of our lives now.” Makes total sense.

Just goes to show how disconnected and irrational the though process is today. Very sad to see that this is the reality of many out there these days.

you can still choose the First in Flight and First in Freedom plate, when I got my license plate I got the first in flight by default.
