Just wanted to relay the difficulty we had registering a boat we bought in SC last fall. SC does not require a title for the trailer, but NC does. The seller provided a title for the boat and a notarized bill of sale for the trailer. NC gave me such a runaround over the trailer that we considered scrapping it for a new one. It took multiple trips to the tag office, one trip to have state police verify trailer vin, and numerous letters to raleigh before we received a NC title for the trailer. The whole process was nearly a month. I highly recommend avoiding SC boat purchase unless seller has trailer title in hand. Almost forgot, we also had to purchase a bond for the value of the trailer which required two appraisals at our expense.

Interesting. Does that mean that watercraft trailers in SC do not have a license tag affixed?

The seller had already removed his plate, if it had one, so I am not certain about that. NC requires trailer registration, similar to registering an auto, in order to obtain the plate. Purchasing a boat at a dealer might be easier, but it was a true ordeal for us purchasing from a private party. The seller became just as frustrated, and spent a great deal of his time helping tow the boat for appraisals etc.
