I received a letter in the mail yesterday afternoon (5/15) stating that my insurance company has turned me into the NC DMV as having no insurance since 3/17. The letter goes on to say that I must turn in my tag by 5/17 if I do not get this corrected. Note: the tag office was within minutes of closing when I received the letter yesterday, hence I had to go today. The tag is due to be turned in tomorrow, a Saturday.

The problem is that I've had continuous insurance with my insurance company since I bought my car last fall. It's been the same policy, the same name, etc. When I contacted my insurance company they said they had never turned me into the NC DMV because obviously I've been paying my car insurance. They have no idea what has happened.

I've been told that the problem may be is that I'm listed second on the policy since I share the policy with my father. I own my car, its in my name, but we have a joint policy because it saves us $600 to be on the same policy. I believe this is b.s. because my name is clearly on the policy and is listed for my car.

So I went to my insurance company and got forms to bring to the tag office which state that I have had insurance and still do. The lady at the tag office told me that the computer won't let her update my file and now I have to wait for Rachel in Raleigh to get back to her.

The letter demanded I turn in my tag by TOMORROW! What do I do? I have to have my car for work due to a lack of inaccessible public transportation. Then there is the matter of the fines. I'm the breadwinner of my house and my hours have been cut to 12/wk at work, so I simply don't have money to be throwing around for inaccurate fines.

I really need advice on this matter. Thanks.

Tomorrow is Saturday and I am not aware of any tag office open on Saturday's . Relax about it over the weekend.
Show your documentation to the tag office again as soon as they open on Monday Morning or call the dmv and explain it. If you got the documentation of insurance coverage during that time period you can relax some. The dmv phone number is
919-715-7000 try to use a speaker phone because you may be put on hold for awhile since that one number handles a variety of dmv issues for all 100 counties.
good luck

First your insurance company should have been more responsive, and offered to provide a form proving your coverage, think it is an FS-1 or something like that.

Don't let others confuse you by comments about tag offices being closed. The tag offices around the state are private contractors, and are NOT the DMV. The DMV office is probably located at the same facility as the local Highway Patrol Headquarters or the Drivers License office.

Went through much the same when I changed insurance companies, and the guy at the DMV was much less hysterical than the notice I received in the mail. I had obtained the FS-1 form and the matter was resolved in only a few minutes, and no fines.
