I've searched online but can't find the answer. What does a new resident need to do to get a NC drivers licence license if you have one from another state? TYIA

You have to take a test on the rules of the road and pas the eye exam. I printed off the law booklet and studied it. You need to memorize the shapes of signs, as that was the only hard part for me.

Got mine a couple weeks ago, moving from SC. An eye test was required but no rules of the road test. The following link lists the required documents. The fee was about $25-30 I think. https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/help/movin...residents.aspx

If you have time, make a reservation. At our DMV, the first one available was about 5 weeks out, but reservation holders got priority. Some folks w/o reservations had been waiting several hours.

Given the driving I see every day, proof you have a pulse and aren't totally blind. If that. No actual driving ability required!

Seriously: Just show up, take a basic road-sign-knowledge test and an eye test. Ignore the DMV's recommendation to make a reservation. You don't need it, though you'll have to wait a while (it's the DMV; what did you expect?!). Try to go early, and avoid Mondays and Fridays. It's not that bad.

Do know that, weirdly, there are separate offices for licenses and registering your car. Sometimes they're close together but other times they're far apart. You don't have to go to an office in the county where you live. At least I didn't.

Which should I do first? Get my NC license or register my vehicles in NC? I plan to do them the same day if I can, but I'm not sure if one is required to be completed first.

TIA.

I was surprised at how challenging the road sign part was. You literally need to memorize all shapes and what goes in them. Obviously, some are very easy, but there are some you rarely or never see.

I got my NC ‘license in 1984 went with my then girl friend, who was renewing hers. She took the sign test first (back then, with an officer, not on the computer.). When it was my turn, and got to the right-pointing triangle, after I answered “no passing zone”, the officer called over to her and said “he got it!” (Only one she missed.)

When I renewed most recently, I was tempted to answer with the official MUTCD* sign number, but figured that might cause me more trouble than it was worth.

I don't understand the purpose of the sign test. When will we ever see a sign without the words or pictures in it?

I believe you need to get your drivers license first. It is required for you to register you car in NC.
