I mostly grew up in an area about an hour east of Charlotte but have lived in Nashville, TN the past 3.5 years. I decided that I was going to relocate to Asheville as I love the mountains and would like to be closer to family. I had 2 job offers(social service field) in Asheville and 1 in Hickory and I decided to take the one in Hickory after spending time in Asheville. I love it in Asheville but decided that for me, it is more of a place to visit rather than live...I thought the weather would be a little too cold for my liking among other reasons. So I am moving to Hickory(or a nearby town) within the next 2 months. I know a decent bit about the economy with the furniture business going overseas and heard that they are trying to appeal to those retiring. On this board I have only seen families or older professionals relocating to the area for various reasons. I would love to know more about the demographics in this area and what types of things there are to do for a 25 year old single girl. Thanks for any help you can give me!!

I recently relocated back to Hickory from Martha's Vineyard. I grew up here and lived out of the state for 18 years. I too was a little nervous moving back, wondering if I would find anything here for me. I moved back to be closer to my family. I've found that it was the best move I ever made, been here a little over a year now. I'm a 39 year old female and am happier than I've ever been! You'll always find interesting things to occupy your time, no matter where you live. There's lots of diversity here amongst the people, activities and lifestyles. Great restaurants from hip to gourmet to family style. Wonderful arts scene, coffee shops and nightlife. Great parks with walking trails, bike riding on or off road. Highland Rec center offers inexpensive workout facilities, basketball, whatever you're in to. There's something here for everyone. If you're comfortable in your own skin, you'll be comfortable here in Hickory. Good luck to you
