I guess the law was intended to protect spouses and rightfully so, but the byproduct of it is hurting some of us. I'm sure it's not the only one of it's kind.

I would just wish that we wouldn't have to pay lawyers so much to step and and force the court to make exceptions.

Every law is a two-edged sword.
That's why laws are typically hammered out in compromise.
