Why is it that I can buy a condo in Raleigh, NC for ~ $200k and still make $51k as an entry level tax professional(according to salary.com), but anywhere in northern NJ I would only be making ~ 8k more($59k according to salary.com) and the comparable condos go for $400-$500k?? If I wanted to buy something for $200k in NJ, it would be run down, small, and an hour + commute on congested highways to work. I dont understand why the huge discrepancy exists or am I missing somthing?

another disgruntled Jersey ready to come down?
we made the move last year and could not be happier. my DH 's pay went down almost $2/hr but we still managed to buy a new home, and i have been a SAHM since we left NJ. none of these things were possible up there.
your not missing anything, but i wouldnt wait to long, since i have seen prices go up in the past year.

I wont be in the position to move for a couple of years. I like it out here in NJ with all my family and friends, but when I look at what houses cost out there compared to here I can't believe it.

it really depends on where you will be working.
wake forest is really nice. it has great schools and everything. it has some shopping--but if you need a mall, you will have to go into Raleigh.
dont know too much about N Raleigh to be honest, but i think that wake forest has more of a town feel, where N Raleigh is more subdivision and major highways.
i encourage anyone thinking about it to come down even for a weekend. each town has such a different feel to it.
things are really spread out compared to NJ.
you may "think" you can live in one place and work in another--and many do...but they have a long drive even without the traffic. its not like NJ where everything is 10 or 20 minutes away--it may take you that much time just to go from one side of your town to the other down here.

You won't make the same money in NC. NJ offers a lot more in terms of the economy and access to everything. Raleigh is landlocked (3hrs to the OB's). I do like Raleigh better, than NJ, however, I can't afford to have my salary cut in 1/2.

Statistically speaking, that is not true (YMMV).

For example:
Passaic County, NJ Avg Income 81K, Avg Home 398K
Wake County, NC Avg Income 81K, Avg Home 213K
