I lived in Essex County, NJ and am now in York County, SC (just south of Charlotte). It's different in a lot of ways, but yet the same for us.

Different in that it's mostly cheaper (mortgage and utilities, specifically - other things like water and groceries are actually MORE expensive, and daycare is the same cost). Our neighbors are as great here as they were in NoNJ. Our church is just as great. The main difference is the STRESS LEVEL. The stress just rolled off our backs the minute we moved into our house. That's the major difference for us. Less traffic, less rudeness on the roads, less hustle and bustle - you would think it doesn't mean much, but it DOES.

I too live in Essex County and will be moving to NC soon. Hopefully within the next year. I am soooo stressed living here. The people are rude and road rage is crazy.

Originally from Bergen County. Also lived in Philadelphia before moving to NC, 12 years ago this month. Haven't regretted the move at all.
Housing is less expensive (sold my 1450 sq ft, 3 bedroom townhouse in PA for about $185k. Bought a 3,300 sq ft, 5 bdm home in SE Chlt for $245k.) Property taxes much lower in NC. But I do have to agree with "Girl", for some reason food, groceries and other items are more expensive in NC. My car insurance is about 1/2 what it used to be in PA and NJ. I guess everything is relative.
I did not move here because of costs, i moved for quality of life. I used to commute in NJ to NY (about 8 miles) and it would take 1 - 1 1/2 hours, now my commute is 10 miles and can take about 20 minutes with traffic. Traffic here is sitting through about 3 light changes without moving. Stress levels much lower. Family friendly in most areas of the city.

We moved from Somerset County, NJ, to Union County, NC. I have also lived in Bergen, Essex and Monmouth counties. We love it, love it, love it here! Just do a search on the board, you'll find many positive responses from people who made the same transition.

Good luck!

We just moved to Hickory from Monmouth County.
I grew up in Essex county.
I could give you a book of reasons why living here is so great,
but my message is:

GET OUT OF DODGE BEFORE NJ IS IN BOTH YOUR POCKETS!!!!
We love living here and do not miss Nj at all except for family.
