In brief, the state taxes income, just like the feds. The only other tax the state gets is gas tax (incl in price) and they split the sales tax with the county that you're in.
Then the state does fees (license plate, etc) on various stuff...but that's technically not the same as a tax.
County gets sales tax (the part that state doesn't get), property tax on house, car, and anything else big you own (boat, etc).
IF YOUR LOOKING FOR LOW TAXES, I DON'T THINK YOU WILL FIND AN AREA WITHLOWER TAXES THAN CURRITUCK COUNTY NC. IT'S A NICE AREA CLOSE TO THE BEACH , GREAT SCHOOLS, AND AS I SAID LOW TAXES, I WROTE IN ANTHER POST THAT I HAVE A 3,550 SQ FT CUSTOM BRICK HOME WITH MOTHER INLAW SUITE, 2700 SQ FT BRICK GARAGE WITH LIFT AREA, 1.06 ACRE ON CUL=DE-SAC ONLY 15 MIN TO BEACH!!!! AND I ONLY PAY 1,404 DOLLARS A YEAR TAXES OHH DID I MENTION ITS FOR SALE ???? forsalebyowner.com area code 27939 grandy nc hee heee plug no ok really the taxes in other areas are slightly higher and yes you have to pay taxes for your cars boats etc.... but its not bad and compared to where i came from on long island where i would be paying over 12,000 for less than what i got here, a few hundred for my cars etc.. a year tax isn't bad .

I have read about low taxes. NC is required by law to revalue real estate (property) every 7 or 8 years. In 2006 Bladen county hired a company in Charlotte to appraise property in the county. I have 2 tracts - one is 14.84 acres with half of it swamp and 11.65 acres with a 3000 SF house built on it. These 2 tracts adjoin each other. My revaluation came back with the value of the back 14.84 Ac more than double and the front with house with a 165% increase. I appealed and found they had listed my house as 3800 SF. I was told they would redo the appraisal and that 800 SF would be a substantial decrease of around $60/SF. HA HA. They never came to reappraise and when I got the new listing, they decreased the 14.84 Ac by $6000 and the front by $17,000 (for 800 SF???). Last year I paid about $1900 in tax and now they want over $3000. All that for no city water, no sewer, no trash pick up (I drive 5 miles to a dumpster with my trash). The nearest sizeable town is about 20 miles for shopping, groceries, doctor, hospital etc. and the county sheriff dept. is that far away. I do have a volunteer fire dept. about 5 miles.
If my house was in Raleigh or Charlotte I could understand the valuation but not out in the backwoods. I am appealing again, but who knows what will happen.
