Wow, what a surprise I had today. We just recently on Feb 13th had my car inspected for the NC state inspection. This is something I was kinda excited about since living in Maryland you did not have inspections. I thought well the car must be in pretty good shape and safe since it passed inspection without a problem. However, to noavail yesterday driving back from Virginia the car (2002 Chrysler Sebring) started making this horrible draging sound so I took the car back to the Meineke place and I had to replace all of the brakes and rotors to the tune of $674.00. He told me it passed inspection, however, they are not by law allowed to take the wheels off and check the brakes during a state inspection.

Can any of you great people on this forum explain that to me?

Thanks,

Char

Any state inspection is just going to cover basic safety features of the car, doesn't take the place of regular vehicle maintenance.

Brakes wear out.

Whether they checked the rotors a week ago or not you were going to have to replace the brakes anyway. That horrible sound you heard was the signal for the brakes to be replaced.

Yeah...what you said! The inspection shows that the brakes were working at the time of the inspection....it's not a diagnostic for maintenance.

Wow! In WV where I came from, they inspected your car and I mean inspected (and I mean reputable inspection stations. You can always get the back street, bubba inspection if you needed it.) They checked lights, BRAKES, tires, rotors, bumper heights, wheel dimension protruding out of the wheel well, etc. etc. etc. This is one area, and I repeat, one area where we were envious of Buckeyes. They don't (or at least I still think they don't) have inspection stickers on their cars.

Yeah some states inspections are more thorough than others, and if you go to a full service station it is to their advantage to point out if you need new brakes since it may mean more revenue for them.

I guess I don't understand the point of the original post. Its not like the inspection 2 weeks before would have changed the outcome of the situation if the worn rotors had been noted. It just would have meant laying out the $600 dollars sooner.

I have lived in quite a few different states and I have never mistaken a state safety inspection for anything other than a money making proposition for the state.

I get regular maintenance at my dealer/service station to avoid surprises like worn out brakes.
