LOL, just what I figured. You sure you didn't go to school in Kinston?

There is no reason for anyone to move to Kinston. Greenville is really the only decent city in Eastern NC.

I grew up in Snow Hill. It's a nice town, for people from that area. I'm not sure I'd consider it as an outsider, though I'm sure they could use the tax dollars. The thing about living somewhere like Snow Hill is you will make frequent trips to Kinston, Greenville, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, etc. There are few restaurants and shopping opportunities, though it has come a long way in the last 30 years.

Places like La Grange and Snow Hill are very slow pace and quiet if that's what you're looking for. For shopping you'll have to go to Greenville, Goldsboro, or Kinston. They're decent places if you want a quiet and slow paced lifestyle.

And the only thing I enjoy is going to the lake to swim in the summer. It's March and still freezing here, with snow up to my waist, snowbanks even higher. The cold is killing me. And NC sounds so good right now! I've traveled all my life, was in the Air Force, lived in cities and I wouldn't enjoy a place with 200,000+ people. The nearest "city" of any size has only 32,000 people. I'd think a community of 22,000 with a young mayor with parks & rec, pools, water park and beaches just a couple hours away - sounds good to me sitting here in 22 F !
You should consider Washington and avoid Kinston.

Nowhere in Maine is anything like Kinston. Let me put it this way regarding all of those nice things that you see. You can put lipstick on a pig but in the end, you still have a pig. The poverty and the numbers of people living in poverty stuns the senses. I thought I had seen it all. I lived in Maryland and had been to some of the worst neighborhoods from Washington DC to New York City. Visit Camden NJ before you decide to move to Kinston. If you think you can handle Camden then you should be good to go in Kinston.
