I was just wondering if anyone out there who might be contemplating relocation to NC is subscribing to "Our State" magazine. Every month they profile a different NC town, and in general profile life and places in NC. Their photography is absolutely beautiful.
Blue Ridge Magazine is another fairly good magazine.
I've subscribed for 18 years and have noticed a definite upswing in the number of adverts from developers. Kinda hard to be a magazine that touts the "pristine beauty" of an area, and has articles about "Blue Ridge life" (usually profiling artisans and those working to preserve rapidly disappearing mountain characters) only to be supported by advertisers whose intent is to destroy what they write about. But <cynical/> subscriptions alone don't keep the magazine going </cynical>. I've kept all my back issues, and enjoy the earlier - 90s - copies than today.
As a western NC Realtor I've given Our State magazine subscriptions to clients who've moved into the area as a thank you gift. I do agree with Silverwing, I think that the earlier editions were much better. Southern Living is also a good choice. Southern Living focuses on the south as whole but does offer feature articles on NC regularly. Also check into the "city" magazines. Each large city (Charlotte, Winston Salem, Greensboro, etc.) offer their own magazines. In Charlotte there was Charlotte Magazine and Southpark (I think I've remembered the names right ). These are very specific to the city they're based in, but offer good info on "hidden spots" with in the city.
I've been subscribing to Our State for five years and I love it. The pictures are truly beautiful. It's exciting when I see a picture of a place I've been. I also subscribe to Blue Ridge Country and like that one too.
One of our local farmers suggested Our State to me, although I have not subscribed I have bought every one in the store since than. Silly me, I can probably save money through a subscription! Thanks.
I love "Our State". Don't tell my children that the old receipe for baked macarroni and cheese (that was handed down generation to generation, brought over on the Mayflower), actually came from "Our State" in 2005. What they don't know......? I know, I'm bad....however, although my grandmother was a great southern cook, she was also lactose intolerant.
