I would say yes since the tag office sells non real plates to put on the front
Sunny - I think you're right! I've seen those plates they sell at the DMV. But with that being said, I think you're better off replacing a license plate from another state with something else. A cop stopped a friend of mine who still had a NJ plate on the front. She had a valid NC plate on the back of her car, and when the cop walked up to her window, he asked her "Which is it - NJ or NC"? You might end up with a higher chance of getting a ticket if the cop who stopped you had a "bad experience" with someone from your former state. So get a sports team plate or do what I did. I've got a Star Trek plate with 7 of 9 on it. I hope no one is expecting to see Jeri Ryan step out of my car though!
Do a lot of states do this? How in the heck do they enforce it? Hunt me down in Charlotte?
Don't know, but Maryland wanted my expired plates returned. The DMV sent a registered letter. I guess they got the new address from the Postal Service.
Wow. Maryland's hardcore.
Michigan's never asked for a plate back from me. Traditonally they get hung up in the garage. But, traditionally I live in Michigan with my garage. Since that's not the case anymore.....? I think I'll give it a shot, and just act stupid if I get pulled over. I can pull off stupid amazingly well.
Bet it might be a problem if you went back to Michigan to visit friends for family, but if you want to brag that "I'm not from here" go ahead, I see a lot of cars pushing "I'm not from here" plates on their NC registered vehicle.

Um, yeah, strange how some of us aren't ashamed of being from elsewhere. Or something.
It's not a matter of bragging. I call it "representing". It's sort of like wearing a t-shirt of the state/city/college/whatever that you're from when you're out of town. It's a great way to meet people from the same place. And when you're new to a place, meeting people with whom you have something in common is usually a plus. So I appreciate the go-ahead. Thank you ever so much.
P.S.
Why do think it might be a problem if I went back to visit friends or family in Michigan?
Huh.Thats odd. I can only speak for FL and GA but when you buy a tag its YOURS. If you move to another state, you just throw it away or hang it up (Or put it on the front of your vehicle) But it does belong to you. If you buy anothe rcar you can just transfer the tag to the new vehicle whatever
