I've been in Plaza-Midwood Charlotte for 14 years and just got a great job offer from a family member in Apex/Cary/Holly Springs area. I'm having a difficult time trying to decide if I should go or not. I know we will lose friends but gain family. Two girls 4 and 3. I'm 39 and the new position would be a career change but lateral with potential for faster increases. My issue is that I am wondering if I will have culture shock from leaving center city charlotte to go to suburbia raleigh. Will I regret leaving here? Has anyone else done this move and been fine with it? regreted it? Your experiences will help.

I would be moving from a 2000 sqft bungalow in center city charlotte (3 miles from work, doing web stuff) to much larger home like 3600+ (is a larger house really better?) working with my sisters' husband as project manager building homes in the burbs. Not really any office, just bouncing around to new construction managing the projects.

Kids are young enough not to effect them much with a move like that but once we decide we will probably stay through high school. We are currently waiting on lottery for Shantilly Montessori and have the option for Highland if Shantilly falls through. Sheesh, this is stressing me out.

Man, that's tough - but how nice to have options

First of all, I think only you and your wife can really make this decision and you need to make it based on lifestyle preference. You are in a great area now, in a home that has undoubtedly done nothing but appreciate, living an urban lifestyle. Going there means taking on a suburban lifestyle - a total opposite of what you have now.

Maybe you should take a piece of paper, draw a vertical line down the middle and write pros and cons for staying where you are and for where you could go. That might help you to figure out what your true preferences are. Good luck!!

Well, one idea, you could live downtown Raleigh and commute out to the burbs but not sure how long that commute might be.
