I love any kind of BBQ but NC is the best. And by "NC" I mean the vinegar based. I've heard there is a "western NC" type which is more like mid-western (KC etc) BBQ. That aint NC BBQ.
More specifically, what places in NC do you think have the best? And what's the best BBQ you can buy in the grocery stores?

This topic has really been done to death before. Anyway, my favorites in no particular order:
Carter Brothers BBQ, High Point
Hurseys BBQ, Burlington
Little Richards BBQ, Winston-Salem
Lexington BBQ, Lexington
R&R BBQ, Concord

Did a search and didn't find much on this topic in general. I had some Smithfields from the store and thought it was decent but nothing great - is it better "fresh" from the franchise?

For what its worth, these are the two restaurants providing barbecue for Governor-elect Perdue's Inaugural Ball:
Eastern-style - Wilber's Barbecue in Goldsboro
Western-style - Hursey's Bar-B-Q in Burlington

Lexington BBQ is good. My favorite though is Bee's BBQ down in Greenville. Alton Bridge's in Shelby is decent too.

I like Gary's in China Grove, Moore's in New Bern, Wilbur's in Goldsboro, can't remember the name of the place in Wilson.
I think the bbq arguments are rather silly. Don't compare a type of que to your "perfect que." Just decide whether it is good or not.
The big thing with me is fat content. I do not like to find huge blobs of fat in my chopped que, Certainly prefer vinegar to ketchup based, but you won't see going for fast food if there is a que joint around, regardless of type.
